The Role of Asteroids and Comets in the Solar System

Although the chances of such an event are low, even a small asteroid may cause devastating damage if it were to hit Earth. However, comets are also a potential threat-a lesser-known one than that of asteroids. The passage of a comet through the inner solar system potentially leads to the disruption of the orbits of other celestial bodies, thereby causing possible impacts. On the other hand, comets have opened up avenues for exploration by scientists. NASA's Deep Impact mission successfully impacted the comet Temple 1 back in 2005 and rendered them a useful source for research into the composition and behavior of comets, which, in turn, provided great insight into the way these ice-based celestial bodies behave.

There are future attempts to exploit the resources of an asteroid. Some of them contain useful metals and minerals, and asteroid mining has been pretty much the vogue in the last few years. Companies and even space agencies are already considering the possibility of extracting asteroid resources as a source of materials for space and related explorations.
